ODI 12c Smart Import Fails With Error "java.lang.RuntimeException: Java.lang.StackOverflowError" (Doc ID 2327734.1)

Symptoms

Using the Smart Export utility to export Oracle Data Integrator (ODI) 12c Projects (containing numerous Packages and Mappings) from an existing instance (ODI 12.2.1.0.0) and running the Smart Import utility to bring them into a new instance (ODI 12.2.1.2.0), the Smart Import fails with the below error:

The following heap size values were set for the target ODI Studio Environment:

AddVMOption -Xmx8096M
AddVMOption -Xms2048M
AddVMOption -Xss10m   (tried adding other values like 16m, 32m, 64m, 128m, 256m and even 512m)

Each time the ODI cache was deleted - however the error still persisted.
