Capture Import Server Fails to Import Documents and Error "The Unique Reference Number field is not defined" Occurs

Symptoms
Capture Import server is not able to import any documents. The logging information in the Import Server reports the message "The Unique Reference Number field is not defined". The complete logging shows:
12/18/17 20:09:17 5116 Processing attachment #1 [FILENAME.pdf].
12/18/17 20:09:17 708 The Unique Reference Number field is not defined.
12/18/17 20:09:17 708 Patch Code [0] is not valid.
12/18/17 20:09:17 1132 The VBA macro's BeginFile event has aborted processing during the import of file [D:\{PATH}\eceMail\ISP7255794.pdf].
12/18/17 20:09:17 1116 No pages were added to the new batch. This batch will be removed.
12/18/17 20:09:17 5218 Message was not imported.
12/18/17 20:09:17 708 The Unique Reference Number field is not defined.
12/18/17 20:09:17 708 Patch Code [0] is not valid.
