WLS Clustered Timer EJB Fails with NullPointerException After Redeploy (Doc ID 2600405.1)

Symptoms

When the WLS Clustered Timer EJB application is redeployed using 'Update' option in the Admin Console the EJB throws following exception. Also the WebLogic TIMER Table which is used as persistence layer for the EJB shows multiple (duplicate) records .
The issue does not occur when app is deleted and redeployed, it appears only when Redeployed using 'Update' option which makes the newer version of the application as Active while previous version moves to Retired state.
