New Content Items Fail to be Indexed in Elasticsearch

Symptoms
Webcenter Content 12.2.1.4.0 configured for Elasticsearch.
Items already in the repository can be searched for, but any new items checked in are not searchable.
When going into the DOC_INFO page of one of these items it shows that the Status is GenWWW and that indexing failed.
The trace log will show an error like this:
