Applets and Java WebStart Applications Are Unable to Run Due to Incorrect HEAD Request Configuration on Server (Doc ID 2722947.1)

Symptoms

After upgrading to Java SE 8u202 or later, Java Applets and WebStart applications fail to start.  The following error can be seen in the applet or application log:

Simply running the Applet or WebStart application is all that is necessary to trigger the fault.  In some cases, applications can fail on the second launch due to caching.

Changes

 Updating to Java SE 8u202 or later for deployment technologies on a client (i.e. browser plugin).
