Sqldeveloper Fails To Work On Linux (Doc ID 2822009.1)

Last updated on JUNE 01, 2022

Applies to:

Oracle SQL Developer - Version 21.2 and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

Trying to get SQL Developer working on Linux.

Followed the installation instructions:

RPM for Linux Installation Notes
This download does not include the JDK. SQL Developer supports either Oracle JDK 8 or 11.

To install and run:

Ensure you have a JDK installed, if not, download here
rpm -Uhv sqldeveloper-(build number)-1.noarch.rpm (install the package)
cd sqldeveloper (go to sqldeveloper folder)
./sqldeveloper.sh (run sqldeveloper.sh file)
You will be prompted to enter a jdk path. (ie usr/java/jdk1.8.0_181)
SQL Developer will automatically launch once jdk location is provided

Installed JDK 8 and entered the JDK path when executed sqldeveloper.sh; however, it does not start. It just sits there with no logs and no errors.

Changes

This is a new installation on Linux.
