Rotation of access_log and error_log Files is Not Working (Doc ID 438705.1)

Last updated on AUGUST 14, 2019

Applies to:

Oracle HTTP Server - Version 10.1.2.0.2 to 10.1.3.4.0 [Release AS10gR2 to AS10gR3]
Oracle Fusion Middleware - Version 10.1.3.5.0 to 10.1.3.5.0 [Release AS10gR3]
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

In the Oracle HTTP Server (OHS) log directory, ($ORACLE_HOME/Apache/Apache/logs), one will find access_log and/or error_log files that have grown to 2GB in size which cause OHS to stop responding.
Note:  This is for an Application Server install in a Grid Control home.
Notice that the error_log/access_log have no timestamp extension.

Without removing these files or moving them to a new name, the server fails to restart with the following error:

$ ./opmnctl startall
opmnctl: starting opmn and all managed processes...
================================================================================
opmn id=host:port
0 of 1 processes started.

ias-instance id=EnterpriseManager0.server
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
ias-component/process-type/process-set:
HTTP_Server/HTTP_Server/HTTP_Server

Error
--> Process (pid=<pid>)
failed to start a managed process after the maximum retry limit
Log:
<oracle_home>/opmn/logs/HTTP_Server~1
