Goal

You need to validate custom metadata fields when users check in content. How can you validate the data in a request, and return an error page if it is incorrect?

In certain cases, complex rules need to be applied to control the metadata values that contributors can use. For example, perhaps only administrators should be able to check in content with a certain Content Type, or only administrators should be allowed to change the security group field on the update page.

Starting with Content Server 7.5, Rules can be used to alter the display of metadata fields on an HTML page, as well as validate data after a service request. For maximum flexibility and security, data validation should always occur during the service request, even if it is also done on the HTML page.
