Searching the Collection Results in Error: "Document Access Gateway initialization failed for collection"

After upgrading to IE 7.0 (or higher) on our server we receive the below error when trying to search the collection, what is wrong?
To resolve this error, you need to upgrade to Verity 5.5.
However, after upgrading to Verity 5.5 and completing a full collection rebuild we have 0 content items in our search. The above errors are gone, but we can't full text search content. Do you know why that is?
