"Actions" Menu on Search Results Page Does not Change to Reflect Status of Content Item

Symptoms
When a search is done and results returned, the Actions menu for every item gives the choice of "Check Out", even if the item is already checked out. Why does it not change this option to "Undo Checkout" if the item is already checked out?
