Enterprise Search gives Error E1-0114 and Does Not Work for Complex Searches

This problem can occur on any platform.

Symptoms

Enterprise Search to search between a 7.5.1 system and a new 10gR3 system when using complex searches does not work. Simple full text searches work but if you use more than one word in the full text field or try to search for title and a full text word the search will fail.  For example:

- A search on one or more meta fields: Works
- Full text search only - with one word: Works
- Full text search with more than one word (with comma or space in between): Error E1-0114
- Full text search with one word in combination with another field: Error E1-0114
