Goal

Upgrading to 64-bit JDK With Oracle Application Server 10g Release 3 (10.1.3)

Oracle Application Server 10g Release 3 (10.1.3) is released with JDK 1.5 (32-bit). This document provides supplemental instructions on how to replace this with JDK 1.5 64-bit. This is possible as a post-installation option, if desired to use a 64-bit JDK for its advantages. In addition, Oracle has tested and certified the Oracle provided components using JDK 1.5 64-bit.

This complies with the certification provided from the following location, where it should be checked if JDK 1.5 (64-bit) is certified for a specific platform:
Oracle SOA and WebCenter (10.1.3.1 and 10.1.3.2) Certification Information

Important Information

  • Using JDBC Thin or OCI Drivers

For Linux x86-64 and Windows 64-bit (AMD64/EM64T), it is not certified/supported to replace the installed JDK 1.5 (32-bit) with JDK 1.5 (64-bit) if planning to use the JDBC OCI drivers. The JDBC OCI driver will require 64-bit libraries which are not available on the originally installed 32-bit application on these platforms. This certification is only when planning to use JDBC thin drivers on Linux x86-64 and Windows 64-bit (AMD64/EM64T). Check the link above for certified Oracle Database Servers. See Note:365120.1 for more information on using JDBC driver with Oracle Fusion Middleware (SOA /Application Server) installations.

  • Required Patch Set Level

When certified for a given platform, JDK 1.5 64-bit is now supported for global Application Server usage. (Following instructions below to replace ORACLE_HOME/jdk and configuring every OC4J container to use JDK 1.5 64-bit). In order to meet this certification, the Oracle Application Server 10g Release 3 Patch Set 10.1.3.4+ must be applied. More information on obtaining latest Patch Sets is in the following document:

Note 397022.1 Oracle Application Server 10g Release 3 (10.1.3) Support Status and Alerts
    --See: "Oracle Application Server Patchsets"
  • Past Certifications

In past certifications, updating the JDK was certified only on a custom OC4J level (see Note 396096.1) on Solaris, Linux and Windows with at least the AS 10.1.3.3 Patch Set applied. If you followed this, and for as long as 10.1.3.3 is maintainable, (see Note 944866.1), this would still be supported when using your custom applications. When configuring JDK 1.5 64-bit on a global level, at least AS Patch Set 10.1.3.4+ must be applied.
  • Java 6 64-bit

If Java 6 64-bit is desired, this is also supported. The same steps would be necessary during the process, but the following outlines some specific Java 6 items:
