"O/S Message: No such file or directory" Error Encountered While Running "WHENEVER OSERROR" Command

Symptoms
After connecting to SQL*Plus, when the following commands are executed :
SQL> WHENEVER OSERROR EXIT SQL.SQLCODE ROLLBACK
SQL> CONNECT <USERNAME>/<PASSWORD>
the following error is encountered :
O/S Message: No such file or directory
Disconnected from Oracle9i Enterprise Edition Release 9.2.0.8.0 - 64bit
However, when the "WHENEVER OSERROR" command is executed after the "CONNECT" command, it works properly.
