Purpose

This note has some clarification on the setting of sm_svcname in dm_oracle/pin.conf:

#=======================================================
# sm_svcname
#
# Database service name.
#
# This is the service_name you used to define SQL*NET alias (sm_database)
# in the tnsnames.ora file when you set up the Oracle database.
# By default, this entry was not configured when you install Infranet.
# You should only enable this when you need 10g RAC HA support.
#=======================================================
#- dm sm_svcname

Questions and Answers
 Assuming this is for Oracle RAC only, since that's pretty clear; but, is this 10g only and is this HA only? Does it apply for 11g?
 Is it necessary when using Oracle HA without failover?
 Should it be disabled if having LOAD_BALANCE?
 Does it apply for a single-schema setup with high-availability?
