Sending Mail in Convergence Fails with Alert "SMTP Error"

When pressing the "Send" button for a completed message, Convergence returns an alert message:
Firebug in Firefox will show a request like this:
And a response like this:
Using "Copy error" in Firebug shows an error similar to:
mshttpd's http log will show the SMTP server hostname cannot be resolved or the connection is refused, e.g.:

This problem could occur if the SMTP server is disabled, or the port of the SMTP server was changed.
