Convergence - Instant Messaging tab shows Connecting

Symptoms
After users log into Convergence, the Instant Messaging (IM) pane in Convergence shows "Connecting...". If the user sets status to "Available", it shows "Available" in green, but it is still "Connecting...".
If the user tries other operations in Convergence-IM (for example adding a buddy), after clicking the OK button it shows "Adding buddy...". And the add buddy never completes.
Convergence iwc.log has:
DEFAULT: ERROR from com.sun.comms.client.web.AnonymousRequestFilter Thread httpSSLWorkerThread-80-2 at 2012-03-13 13:15:17,302 - Exception occured in doFilter() method
java.lang.IllegalStateException: Make sure you have enabled Comet or make sure the Thread invoking that method is the same a the request Thread.
