What Is Expected Client Behavior When IM Frontend Has Multiple Backends Configured And Backend Server Goes Down?

If all Instant Messaging frontends are configured to talk to multiple backends. eg:
Question: What is the expected user experience if that backend goes down or is restarted?
Will the frontend switch all the users' connections over to another backend without any disconnect/reconnect of the client connection? Or will the XMPP client see this as a disconnect/reconnect?
