Impurge results in Store Error: "Unable to Remove Mailbox ... System I/O Error" (Doc ID 2570109.1)

Goal

Messaging Server's default log show records of "Impurge - Store Error", such as:

Although these error messages appear in the logs, no folders/store .exp* files which report these errors are seen in the store.  So, it looks like impurge actually succeeds in processing and removing them.

What is causing this error condition?
