BRM REST Services Manager connections to Oracle Unified Directory

The BRM REST Services Manager documentation informs the use of the OAuth protocol to authenticate and authorize client applications. For this, you can use Oracle Access Management (OAM).
The documentation also makes it clear that the purpose of the BRM REST Services Manager is to validate access tokens via the OAM OAuth API. However, installing the BRM REST Services Manager requires configuring connections to Oracle Unified Directory (OUD) identity servers.
In this way, questions follow:

Question [1]
- What does BRM REST Services Manager do with OUD connections? What is the purpose of this configuration?

Question [2]
- Is it possible to maintain authentication with OAuth protocol via OAM without using connections to the OUD? In this scenario, the goal is just to validate the access token without querying the Oracle Unified Directory.
