An Orphaned BPM Task Can Not Be Removed (Doc ID 2163588.1)

Symptoms

A user has a BPM task in the Administrative Tasks list that is 1.5 years old. It is for a purchase requisition approval. The requisition was approved long ago, but the task remains orphaned. Administrators do not want the task to show  in the list. The BPM Administrator can not remove the task.
 
Administrators expect to be able to expire/remove a task that is no longer valid. User's may see the error "Error while updating task. Check the underlying exception and the database connection information." for this problem.
