Theme Compilation Issue Due to missing '{' or '}' in Input Less File Error

Symptoms
When attempting to compile a theme, an error message similar to the following occurs:
Making a change to a single less file in an extension, and then previewing that change, causes the entire storefront css to be compiled.
If there are many extensions, this stylesheet can be very large and will take some time to compile. Compilation takes place in a separate thread in the background, so this is what will cause a delay in seeing the changes in preview mode.
This also explains why having a compilation issue in one extension's less file will cause the error observed even if the currently updated less file contains no problems.
