Symptoms

When attempting to run an OBIEE agent setup for Email delivery, the following error occurs:

ERROR
-----------------------
The Agent, $AgentName, has completed with warnings.

AgentID: $location_of_agent
...Trying tSMTP Delivery loop again... Sleeping for 4 seconds

[nQSError: 75027] Failed to open connection to SMTP Server (host ---; port 25).
...
Exceeded number of SMTP delivery retries.


The Agent, $AgentName, has failed
AgentID: /users/username/agentname
[nQSError: 75027] Failed to open connection to SMTP Server (host -- .net, port 25). AgentID: /users/username/agentname.
Trying SMTP Delivery loop again..Sleeping for 6 seconds. AgentID: /users/username/agentname.


STEPS
-----------------------
The issue can be reproduced at will with the following steps:

  1. Login to OBIEE
  2. Configure a user to receive Email:
    1. Click your username dropdown
    2. Click My Account
    3. Click Delivery Options
    4. Click Email in the Devices dropdown
    5. Click Create Device icon (+ under Devices)
    6. Enter:
      • User defined name
      • Category = Email
      • Device type = Either HTML Email or Plaintext Email
      • Address/Number = email address
    7. Click OK
  3. Click New > Agent
  4. On the General tab, leave defaults
  5. On the Schedule tab, leave defaults
  6. On the Condition tab, leave defaults
  7. On the Delivery Content tab:
    1. Enter anything in the subject field
    2. In the Content Field, select either Analysis or Dashboard page
    3. Browse to the object (either analysis or dashboard)
    4. Click any option in the Format dropdown
  8. On the Recipients tab select a recipient
  9. On the Destinations tab, click Specific Devices and choose Email checkbox
  10. On the Actions tab, leave defaults
  11. Click Save and choose a location/name to save the agent
  12. Click Run Agent Now to test the agent
  13. Note the error which occurs after a period of time while the agent runs.
