Unable to delete duplicate compensation cycle in production

An extra compensation cycle plan was created erroneously in our production environment. When I try to delete the duplicated compensation plan, which is titled "DO NOT USE", I receive the error message "CMP-CMP_PLANS_CYC_CANNOT_DELETE", How can we avoid this error?
