Symptoms

UMS fails to send emails with "javax.mail.MessagingException: Could not convert socket to TLS"        

In the managed server logs, the nested exception is due to certificate issues :

exception.type: ERROR
exception.severity: 2
exception.name: Error status received from UMS.
exception.description: Status detail :
         Status type : DELIVERY_TO_GATEWAY:FAILURE,
         Status Content : javax.mail.MessagingException: Could not convert socket to TLS;
  nested exception is:
        javax.net.ssl.SSLHandshakeException: sun.security.validator.ValidatorException: PKIX path building failed: sun.security.provider.certpath.SunCertPathBuilderException: unable to find valid certification path to requested target
