While creating SOAP Connection to Fusion esswebservice "https://<URL>/ess/esswebservice?wsdl" and try "Validate and Test" option or use the connection for Invoke wizard it fails with error

The error detail returned for connection ping is : Error Code: SOAPADAPTR-20027, Error Message:  Cause - Unable to parse definition as configured wsdl is not supported, Action - Verify WSDL definition and please make sure that your schema documents are correct, Error Cause: null

STEPS

The issue can be reproduced at will with the following steps:
1. Create a SOAP connection to esswebservice

2. Run Validate and test to get the error.

3. Test connection may work but while using the connection in Invoke, it fails as well.
