Hostname Set On VM is getting changed (Doc ID 2855446.1)

Last updated on APRIL 25, 2022

Applies to:

OCI Compute - Version N/A and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

You followed the instructions in Oracle doc "How to Permanently Change Hostname in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Compute Environment on Oracle Linux (Doc ID 2325469.1)" and set hostname-label, but still occasionally hostname getting replaced in file , making the affected VM unusable. Most recently happened with <instance ocid>

Changes

You created a VM called "gmhoudinix-xxx" via the API. Amongst 29 others with similar names (just the last 2 digits change), but when hostname service started running, it's hostname was set to "update-hou-vm" :

Feb 9 22:07:16 update-hou-vm systemd[1]: Starting Hostname Service...
Feb 9 22:07:16 update-hou-vm dbus[1488]: [system] Successfully activated service 'org.freedesktop.hostname1'
Feb 9 22:07:16 update-hou-vm systemd[1]: Started LXD - container startup/shutdown.
Feb 9 22:07:16 update-hou-vm NetworkManager[1517]: <info> [1612908436.0549] settings: hostname: using hostnamed
Feb 9 22:07:16 update-hou-vm NetworkManager[1517]: <info> [1612908436.0550] settings: hostname changed from (none) to "update-hou-vm"

This resulted in the VM being useless as it did not correctly contextualise and idled while the workload ran.
