Last updated on JUNE 22, 2023

OCI Compute - Version N/A and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Goal

When working with Instance Configurations in OCI, we may observe the following resources in the Console UI: Block volumes to attach and Block volumes to create.

For the first one, Block volumes to attach , we are prompted to attach the desired volumes when we create the Instance Configuration:

Once we have attached a Block Volume, it will be visible in the Instance Configurations page under Resources > Block volumes to attach:

This resource contains configuration details for block volumes that will be attached to instances launched from this instance configuration.

However, when accessing Block volumes to create under the same Resources page, we may observe that we were never prompted to attach resources for this feature and it cannot even be edited from the OCI Console:

This resource contains configuration details for block volumes that will be created and attached to instances launched from this instance configuration and is helpful in allowing users to enter Block Volumes details as it will eliminate the need of having Block Volumes already provisioned.
For example, users will not be constrained to manually attach Block Volumes for every instance created within the configuration.
