RMAN restore from autobackup and tape fails with RMAN-06172 (Doc ID 1222443.1)

Symptoms

You are using "restore controlfile from autobackup", the backup is on tape, you've allocated the tape channels and any necessary media manager (tape) parameters for an alternate host restore (if such a restore is happening), but the restore fails with RMAN-06172 errors. For example:
