RDBPROD: Thresholds On Default LISTS Storage Area Are Ignored (Doc ID 1331406.1)

Last updated on AUGUST 12, 2016

Applies to:

Oracle Rdb Server on OpenVMS - Version 7.2.1 to 7.2.5 [Release 7.2]
HP OpenVMS Itanium
HP OpenVMS Alpha

Symptoms

With CREATE STORAGE MAP it is possible to define threshold values for LISTS storage areas. However, the values are ignored for the default lists storage area.

Example:

create database filename testdb
segmented string storage area is AREA_BLOB_DEFAULT
default storage area is AREA_DEFAULT
create storage area RDB$SYSTEM
create storage area AREA_DEFAULT
create storage area AREA_BLOB_DEFAULT
create storage area AREA_BLOB_1
create storage area AREA_BLOB_2;

create table blob_1 (image LIST OF BYTE VARYING (10000));
create table blob_2 (image LIST OF BYTE VARYING (10000));

create storage map LISTS_MAP
  store LISTS
   in AREA_BLOB_1
     (thresholds are (55, 65, 85))
     for (BLOB_1.IMAGE)
   in AREA_BLOB_2
     (thresholds are (55, 65, 85))
     for (BLOB_2.IMAGE)
   in AREA_BLOB_DEFAULT
     (thresholds are (55, 65, 85));
commit;

Result of a SHOW STORAGE MAP command:

SQL> show storage map lists_map
  LISTS_MAP
For Lists
Store clause: STORE LISTS
   in AREA_BLOB_1
      (thresholds are (55, 65, 85))
   for (BLOB_1.IMAGE)
   in AREA_BLOB_2
      (thresholds are (55, 65, 85))
   for (BLOB_2.IMAGE)
   in AREA_BLOB_DEFAULT
      (thresholds are (55, 65, 85))

Partition information for lists map:
 Partition: (0) SYS_P00060
  Storage Area: AREA_BLOB_1
   Thresholds are (55, 65, 85)
 Partition: (0) SYS_P00061
  Storage Area: AREA_BLOB_2
   Thresholds are (55, 65, 85)
 Partition: (0) SYS_P00001
  Storage Area: AREA_BLOB_DEFAULT

The threshold information is missing for the default segmented strings storage area AREA_BLOB_DEFAULT.

Changes

Prior to Rdb 7.2.1, there was no mechanism to adjust the THRESHOLDS for an existing area.
