Symptoms

Oracle server processes hang when accessing the control file.

There are several symptoms of this problem:

  • The OS is OpenVMS 8.4, the problems are not seen on earlier (8.3) versions.

  • On an active database in archivelog mode, sessions hang on event 'log file switch (archiving needed)' when the
    redologs needs to be archived.

  • RMAN backup using target database control file will hang.

The RMAN client session hangs in foreground, the server session hangs on
    event 'control file sequential read'

    Server process stack dump:
    sedst1 <- ksedmp <- ksdxfdmp <- ksdxcb <- sspper
    <- sspsck <- %X0 <- vpIdle <- schVpIdlePrim <- schNullThreadRoutine
    <- thdBase <- %X0 <- pthread_main

  • Instance restart will hang on shutdown and at startup on alter database open
