Split Partition On Subparition Templated Table Resulted In System Generated Named Sub-Partitions (Doc ID 1367756.1)

Last updated on OCTOBER 14, 2011

Applies to:

Oracle Server - Enterprise Edition - Version: 11.2.0.1 and later   [Release: 11.2 and later ]
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

After splitting partition of a composite partitioned table, some of the subpartitions of the new partition are having system generated names as opposed to having the custom names given in the subpartition template.

Existing partition structure of table MYTABLE :
PARTITION CUSTOMSUBPARTN_ELSE VALUES (DEFAULT)
( SUBPARTITION CUSTOMSUBPARTN_ELSE_S_2005 VALUES LESS THAN (20060101),
SUBPARTITION CUSTOMSUBPARTN_ELSE_S_2006_Q1 VALUES LESS THAN (20060401),
SUBPARTITION CUSTOMSUBPARTN_ELSE_S_2006_Q2 VALUES LESS THAN (20060701),
SUBPARTITION CUSTOMSUBPARTN_ELSE_S_2006_Q3 VALUES LESS THAN (20061001),
SUBPARTITION CUSTOMSUBPARTN_ELSE_S_2006_Q4 VALUES LESS THAN (20070101),
SUBPARTITION CUSTOMSUBPARTN_ELSE_S_2007_Q1 VALUES LESS THAN (20070401),
SUBPARTITION CUSTOMSUBPARTN_ELSE_S_ELSE VALUES LESS THAN (MAXVALUE) )

Operation performed :
ALTER TABLE MYTABLE
SPLIT PARTITION CUSTOMSUBPARTN_ELSE VALUES (31028)
INTO
( PARTITION CUSTOMSUBPARTN_31028,
PARTITION CUSTOMSUBPARTN_ELSE)
UPDATE INDEXES;

After the split operation, the new partition structure:
PARTITION CUSTOMSUBPARTN_31028 VALUES (31028)
( SUBPARTITION CUSTOMSUBPARTN_31028_S_2005 VALUES LESS THAN (20060101),
SUBPARTITION SYS_SUBP404898 VALUES LESS THAN (20060401),
SUBPARTITION SYS_SUBP404899 VALUES LESS THAN (20060701),
SUBPARTITION SYS_SUBP404990 VALUES LESS THAN (20061001),
SUBPARTITION SYS_SUBP404991 VALUES LESS THAN (20070101),
SUBPARTITION SYS_SUBP404992 VALUES LESS THAN (20070401),
SUBPARTITION CUSTOMSUBPARTN_31028_S_ELSE VALUES LESS THAN (MAXVALUE) )
