Replication stops and the replica reports an IO error:
Increasing the max_allowed_packet causes a repeat of the error, and may cause the Read_Source_Log_Pos to be very far ahead of the Exec_Source_Log_Pos, even though until this point the replica was not lagging far behind the source.
