Replication Halts With 'log event entry exceeded max_allowed_packet' (Doc ID 1502552.1)

Last updated on MARCH 12, 2021

Applies to:

MySQL Server - Version 4.0 and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

Replication stops and the slave reports an IO error:

Got fatal error 1236 from master when reading data from binary log: 'log event entry exceeded max_allowed_packet; Increase max_allowed_packet on master'

Increasing the max_allowed_packet causes a repeat of the error, and may cause the Read_Master_Log_Pos to be very far ahead of the Exec_Master_Log_Pos, even though until this point the slave was not lagging far behind the master.
