When following the Secure Enterprise Search Installation and Upgrade Guide 

For example during installation of SES in mode 3, particularly the post install steps:

Item 9.

grantAppRole(appStripe="search",appRoleName="SearchAdminSuperUserRole", principalClass="", principalName="searchsys")
Location changed to domainRuntime tree. This is a read-only tree with DomainMBean as the root.

Command FAILED, Reason: Cannot add principal to application role.
