Symptoms

After upgrading the MySQL connector and ODBC driver manager -

ODBC manager (unixODBC) : 2.2.14 to 2.3.0
MySQL connector : mysql-connector-odbc-5.1.5r1144-7.el6.x86_64 to mysql-connector-odbc-5.3.4-1.el6.x86_64

Then a select using (Database Gateway for ODBC (DG4ODBC) returns a column as NVARCHAR that was previously returned as VARCHAR.
