How To - Re-Install Exadata Management Package (dbmmgmt rpm) On Exadata Compute Nodes (Doc ID 2134218.1)

Last updated on JULY 10, 2023

Applies to:

Oracle Exadata Storage Server Software - Version 12.1.2.1.0 and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Goal

With the release of image version 12.1.2.1.0, the Management Server was introduced to the Exadata compute nodes. Its main objective is to provide the ability to monitor the components of the Exadata compute nodes in a similar way as the Management Server on the Exadata storage cells. The compute node Management Server includes a command line interface (dbmcli) for the execution of commands and a set of background processes (MS,DBRS,etc).  The Management Server is installed and deployed as part of the image but it requires the configuration of attributes related to the notification of the alerts.

There have been reports of failures of the MS process and after multiple attempts, it is not possible to restart the service again. Some of the reported cases include change on the permissions or ownership for the files related to the configuration.  Many are accompanied by this error:

dbm-01517: cannot start restart server (rs). the operation timed out

The time required to fix the problem could be very long and sometimes even not possible to find the solution.  A quicker alternative is the re-installation of the Management Server which will require the reconfiguration of the attributes related to the notification of alerts.  The goal of this document is to provide the steps to perform the reinstallation.
