Symptoms

Unable to connect to Hive from PySpark using sqlCtx in BDA V4.2 / CDH 5.4.0.

The issue was found by reviewing the pyspark log file.

Caused by: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: Could not initialize class org.apache.derby.jdbc.EmbeddedDriver
at sun.reflect.NativeConstructorAccessorImpl.newInstance0(Native Method)
