tmpwatch installed on Exadata does not remove old directories (Doc ID 2281215.1)

Last updated on JANUARY 17, 2020

Applies to:

Linux OS - Version Oracle Linux 6.7 with Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel [2.6.39] and later
Oracle Exadata Storage Server Software - Version and later
Oracle Cloud Infrastructure - Version N/A and later
Linux x86-64

tmpwatch installed on Exadata Database Server does not remove any empty directory under /tmp even after 10 days without being accessed.  This issue is observed on Exadata Oracle Linux 6 environment only, where non-Exadata environment and Exadata Oracle Linux 5 are not included.

Exadata or later no longer includes tmpwatch as its default package list.  However, the customer may choose to installed tmpwatch on Exadata Database Servers.  (Note that it is prohibited to install additional RPM on Exadata Storage Server.)

This issue could occur if the cron daily job script (/etc/cron.daily/tmpwatch) is left in default.
