Purpose

This is an important note that 12.1 Oracle Notification Service (ONS) needs to be updated to 12.2 ONS on the Grid Infrastructure (GI) tier for scaling and throughput in production systems. Not doing so may consume high numbers of threads. This bulletin is relevant for production deployments that use FAN/FCF with Oracle Database 12c Release 1 with large numbers of ONS subscriptions. This includes Oracle Database 11g configurations that have previously used Advanced Queueing (AQ) for FAN event propagation and are not using OCISessionPool or ODP.NET Managed Provider, and JDBC applications that are not using Universal Connection Pool 12.2 client.

This bulletin describes how to upgrade ONS in Grid Infrastructure 12.1 to ONS 12.2. Once these steps are complete you will have a 12.2 ONS daemon running in a 12.1 Grid Infrastructure environment.

Scope

This document is intended for use by DBAs or System Administrators who manage the Grid Infrastructure cluster environments. Permission to access the cluster operating system and GI home is required.
