Last updated on MARCH 03, 2024

Applies to:

Oracle Database - Standard Edition - Version 19.3.0.0.0 and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

---------------

When try to connect to the database using “sqlplus / as sysdba” (under a domain user in the local ORA_DBA group) got a “ORA-12638: Credential retrieval failed” error. The AutoUpgrade has created a new Windows service called “OracleServiceAutoUpgrade” (which is running instead of the usual OracleService) and this new service is running as a Local System account. Re-creating the service or higher db home is the thing that blocking running the AU. After removing the service without re-creating it is the same error.

If you change it do run as domain Oracle Home user account and restart it, then the error from “sqlplus / as sysdba” goes away and you're able to successfully start the database in upgrade mode. However after doing this, while you restart AutoUpgrade it shuts down the database, delete the service and recreates it using a Local System user account again and then runs into the same error.
