Background Process Terminated, e.g. ORA-471, Accompanied By Alert Log Warning 'Low Open File Descriptor Limit' (Doc ID 375517.1)

Symptoms

You are running Oracle on a Unix/Linux based platform.

In the alert log the next error is reported without additional messages:

ORA-00471: DBWR PROCESS TERMINATED WITH ERROR

 

NOTE:
Instead of DBWR, other background processes could be terminated by the same.



You see in your alert log also warning messages referencing a low setting for file descriptors:

Fri Jun 30 10:00:50 20XX
Oracle instance running on a system with low open file descriptor limit.


The above alert log message may be followed by:

Tune your system to increase this limit to avoid severe performance degradation.

Changes

You have recently added datafiles to the database.
