Purpose


To provide information related to using the Oracle Universal Installer (OUI) version 10.2 for hp OpenVMS.

Scope

This note is for anyone needing assistance installing the 10.2 software on OpenVMS. This is intended to supplement the information already available in Oracle 10G Installation Guide Release 2 10.2.0.2 for hp  OpenVMS. This note covers both Alpha and Itanium platforms.

 Tip 1: Create the OpenVMS directories for oracle home, central inventory, and the scratch area prior to using OUI.
 Tip 2: Follow notes 156484.1 and 403445.1 to avoid problems with low process quotas when running OUI.
 Tip 3: Review the following notes prior to installing Oracle software.
 Tip 4: Disk space Requirements.
 Tip 5: Explanation of Central, Private, and Local Inventories. 
 Tip 6: The Central or Private Inventory must reside on an ODS-5 formatted disk. 
 Tip 7: Precreate Orainst.loc - the pointer to the Central or Private Inventory

 Tip 9: The OUI will report an warning if you specify the Inventory to be a subdirectory of the Oracle Home directory.
 Tip 10: OUI supports only interactive installs. 
 Tip 11: Include the inventory directories in your backups.
 Tip 12: Unix style directory paths are used throughout Oracle 10.2.X.
 Tip 13: Installation logs are in the logs directory under your central inventory.
 Tip 14: Ensure that you can invoke the OpenVMS utilities using the default invocation string.
 Tip 15: Ensure that file ownership and permissions are correct.
 Tip 16: Apache is offered as a standalone product.
 Tip 17: Oracle HTML DB is not available.
 Tip 18: Always use OpenVMS logical names when entering paths.
 Tip 19: Ensure that SCSNODE and TCPIP$INET_HOST have the same value.
 Tip 20: Ensure that tcpip$inet_host does not include the domain. 
 Tip 21: You need 1GB of RAM to run Oracle 10.2.0.2.0.
 Tip 22: Install hp C++ prior to installing Oracle 10.2 on Alpha OpenVMS
 Tip 23: How to stage all three DVDs to disk.
 Tip 24: Deassign OpenVMS logicals tmp and temp prior to invoking OUI.
 Tip 25: JRE and JDK 1.4.2 are bundled with Oracle 10.2
 Tip 26: Do not use rooted logicals.
 Tip 27: Ignorable Errors
 Tip 28: Use a short directory path when staging 10.2 grid control or the 10.2.0.4 patchset to disk.
 Tip 29: Install mandatory patch 5840282 if installing on Itanium.
