Adding an ASM instance with DBCA gives "unable to copy the file from /tmp/oratab to /etc/oratab" (Doc ID 742186.1)

Last updated on AUGUST 04, 2018

Applies to:

Oracle Server - Enterprise Edition - Version: to
This problem can occur on any platform.

When trying to add a clustered ASM instance via DBCA, DBCA brings a pop-up that states:

unable to copy the file from /tmp/oratab to /etc/oratab

The error cannot be ignored since the pop-up does not have an ignore option.

Steps or screens within DBCA before hiiting the problem:

1) Launch DBCA
2) From the "Welcome" screen, check "Oracle Real Application Clusters database"
3) From the "Operations" screen, click on "Configure Automatic Storage Management"
4) From the "Node Selection" screen, Select the node that you want to add ASM

Note: this could also apply to a single-instance (non-clustered or non-RAC) environment.
