Symptoms

Running RMAN restore controlfile from auto backup on z/OS results in an error if no recovery catalog is used:

RMAN-06172: no autobackup found or specified handle is not a valid copy or
piece

The following error may also be observed:

ORA-04101: OS/390 implementation layer error
ORA-04101, FUNC=MIRFNN , ERRORID=1092

The ORA-4101 error may also occur, if the restore controfile command specifies a backup piece, rather than specifying auto backup.

Attempting to restore a control file when no recovery catalog is available.
