Notification Emails Remain Stuck due to "Unable to connect to tranport" Error (Doc ID 1305951.1)

Symptoms

No notification emails are received by the users.

In mailer log you see below sequence of errors:

1) Problem encountered when sending to {[[ Key User <key.user@xxxxxx.com>]]} -> javax.mail.MessagingException: 501 5.1.8 Domain of sender address ebs@xxxxxx.com does not exist

2) Unable to connect to tranport

And the repeated "Unable to connect to tranport" errors may eventually bring mailer down.
