How Can Periods Be Deleted From The GL Calendar That Have Never Been Opened ? (Doc ID 1411119.1)

Goal

Periods have been created in the GL Calendar for 13 Ledgers through to 2015.
In order to prevent the posisblitiy of someone opening a period in the future in error, which would populate GL_BALANCES and slow down processing on the instance, can the periods be deleted ?
The Periods are in the future,  and have never been opened.
