Payroll Run Error: ' Assignment has Negative Net Salary'

Information in this document applies to any platform.
In the past, employees were processed in a payroll run with zero salary for a given period with no problem; any deductions simply went into arrears and were deducted in whole in subsequent runs. Now, for a few employees with zero salary, payroll process is completing with error.
Error was encountered when processing assignment [XXX]
ERROR: Insufficient Earnings to take Pre-Tax Deductions for Date Earned [DD-MMM-YYYY]
ERROR: Assignment has Negative Net Salary for Date Earned [DD-MMM-YYYY]
The issue can be reproduced at will with the following steps:
1. Set salary amount to zero by ticking 'Show Adjustment' and use Replace amount 0.00
2. Run Payroll and get error
