Purpose

Install base tracks the life cycle of an item. Typically, the life cycle starts at receiving the item in inventory. From there it is sent to a customer. At a later moment in time it can be returned for repair or scrapping. All of these actions have impact on the install base item (instance)

The purpose of this document is to discuss and clarify the differences in the way serialized and non serialized items are handled by Install Base.

Serial Control is an inventory item attribute. It has 4 possible values. Serial control can be set at organization level.
The possible values are:

* No Control
* At Receipt
* At Sales Order Issue
* Predefined

Scope

The Intended audience is Install Base users and implementation consultants.
This note will discuss behavior as seen in the application, but also what happens on the background, in the database.
