Essbase Agent/Server v11.1.2.x Hangs or Crashes Intermittently Due to Issue "The lease has expired"

Symptoms
The Essbase server either hangs or crashes due to the error "The lease has expired".
The extract from Essbase server log shows the following:
[2013-11-06T10:34:07.625-18:34] [ESSBASE0] [LM-26] [NOTIFICATION] [16][] [ecid:<ECID>] [tid:2880] Resource [essbase.sec] available. Attempting to sign a new lease.
[2013-11-06T10:34:07.671-18:34] [ESSBASE0] [LM-7] [NOTIFICATION] [16][] [ecid:<ECID>] [tid:2880] Lease Manager successfully acquired/renewed its lease.
[2013-11-06T14:35:10.987-22:35] [ESSBASE0] [LM-26] [NOTIFICATION] [16][] [ecid:<ECID>] [tid:2880] Resource [essbase.sec] available. Attempting to sign a new lease.
[2013-11-06T15:22:30.275-23:22] [ESSBASE0] [LM-37] [ERROR] [32][] [ecid:<ECID>] [tid:2884] The lease has expired.
[2013-11-06T15:22:30.275-23:22] [ESSBASE0] [LM-11] [NOTIFICATION] [16][] [ecid:<ECID>] [tid:2884] Preparing to shutdown abort.
[2013-11-06T15:22:32.275-23:22] [ESSBASE0] [LM-12] [ERROR] [32][] [ecid:<ECID>] [tid:2884] Terminating the process
