Why is the Asset Location Flexfield - Required / Not Required? Are Default Values an option for Key Flexfields?

Goal
All the asset additions we are performing requires location (assignment window) even if the business is not interested of knowing the location of that specific asset. We want the location flexfield functionality to be optional.
Why does Oracle provide the option "required" or not since you are stating that it is mandatory.?
What does exactly the "required" option for each location segment provide for functionality since it is still mandatory when adding/transferring an asset?
Why is Asset Key Flexfield not a mandatory flexfield? The business does not have to enter any value for the asset key flexfield, it is optional.
