How to create non stock item's assets?

Scenario :Users want to define an asset tracking item as a non stock item.
Afterwards when buying this item, it is defined as an Maintenance Asset.
Although there is a way to track stock item as an asset but not sure how to track a non stock item as a Maintenance Asset.
Is this functionality exist?
